A North County family of five struggled with homelessness for nearly two years after the father lost his job and the family was evicted—even while working multiple jobs—and last month they secured a two-bedroom apartment in San Marcos with help from a local nonprofit.

José and Mercedes, who faced long waitlists and eviction that left them living in motels and even their car, moved into a two-bedroom apartment in San Marcos in February with help from nonprofit Humble Design—bringing stability back to their family.

They had stayed at Interfaith’s family shelter before and worked hard to secure market-rate housing.
