ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities identified seven people who died in traffic collisions in the San Diego area over the past two weeks — including 19-year-old Caden Garcia of San Marcos who was killed when his sedan overturned on state Route 78 near North Las Posas Road.  The Coast News Group

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Enrollment in San Diego County's district-run schools dropped nearly 12% over the past decade, with about 53,000 students leaving, while charter schools added around 26,000 students driven by the rise of virtual learning and better support for students with disabilities. This shift is putting pressure on traditional schools and challenging charters to compete for funding + meet changing family needs.  Voice of San Diego
  • A recent analysis by Jakob McWhinney shows that charter school enrollment jumped 41% since 2014 — adding 26,000 students — while district-run schools lost 12% and 53,000 students; charter schools offer more flexible and online options that attract families of students with disabilities.  Voice of San Diego

  • Newly elected Supervisor Paloma Aguirre, who once served as mayor of Imperial Beach, took her seat on the county board during an outdoor ceremony on Tuesday at the County Administration Center where local voters asked for honest and prompt help. Aguirre said the county will act soon+hire a UC Berkeley scientist, put up health warning signs, and expand air-quality checks to fight the Tijuana River sewage problem in the next 30 days.  Voice of San Diego
  • The San Diego County Sheriff's Office returned to Facebook today as it marks its 175th anniversary and renews its commitment to open communication with residents. The agency said it will use Facebook to share updates on public safety and emergency alerts — consolidating several county stations, including San Marcos, into one unified account.  The Coast News Group
