About this event

Attachment theory has become one of the most influential ways of thinking about relationships. Terms like secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment have moved into everyday language about dating, relationships, and even how we understand ourselves. But what does attachment theory actually say, and how well does the popular version match the science? In this meeting, we'll consider what attachment theory can help us understand, as well as some of its important limitations.

Suggested Reading: How to Be More Secure in Your Relationships (Psyche): A readable introduction to attachment theory. What People Get Wrong About Attachment Theory (Psychology Today) A useful review of some common misconceptions about attachment styles. Optional deeper dive: How Integrative Is Attachment Theory? Unpacking the Meaning and Significance of Felt Security (Ryan, Brown & Creswell, 2007) This commentary considers some limitations of attachment theory as a broader account of psychological well-being and healthy relationships.

Our discussion will focus on four core areas:

• What is attachment and what is an "attachment style"?

• Where do attachment patterns come from and how much can they change?

• What can attachment theory help us understand?

• What doesn't attachment theory explain?

A note about the group: Psychology in Action is a discussion group, not a therapy or support group. Our focus is on exploring psychological ideas and research together rather than providing therapy, clinical advice, or personal guidance. You're welcome to connect the discussion to your own experiences, but no one is expected to share anything personal.

We’ll continue trying a more structured format. We’ll spend a set period on each area of discussion before moving to the next, so we can explore each in some depth. I’ll also help manage speaking turns to make room for different voices. When several people want to contribute, I may invite someone who hasn’t spoken yet before returning to those who have. There’s no pressure to speak, and we’ll leave time at the end for open discussion and questions we didn’t get to along the way.

A quick reminder: If your plans change and you're no longer able to attend, please update your RSVP as soon as possible so that someone on the waitlist has the opportunity to join us. Thank you.
